Creativity Shell Literacy Cubes!
Creativity Shell Launches Literacy Cubes, a fun and creative game that teaches a hands-on skill of sewing your own game cube plus literacy skills where students use the cube to play a word making game.
The Creativity Shell is a nonprofit organization on a mission to use creative trades to educate and inspire the next generation of makers. The organization teaches classes such as sewing/textile arts, cooking, building and other creative trades to students in our studios, libraries, schools, ABA therapy centers, the juvenile justice system as well as shelters that rescue children from homelessness and human trafficking. All classes are designed to teach children essential life skills, practical skills and positive mental health coping skills.
According to the US National Center for Education Statistics (NCED) 34% of students are below basic reading level in the fourth grade. Students who do not read proficiently by the 3rd grade are 4 times more likely to drop out of school than their peers. When students drop out of school, they are at a higher risk of joining gangs, being exploited by human traffickers and ending up in the juvenile justice system.
To find a creative solution to this program, the Creativity Shell came up with a fun sewing and learning project called Literacy Cubes! Students of all ages are encouraged to make their own cube, choose 5 letters and 1 vowel for their cube, and start connecting and playing with others to create words!
By bridging the skill of sewing plus a game that promotes literacy together, the Creativity Shell is hoping that reading, writing, and spelling can become a positive experience for young students and adults too!
What do you need to get started?
- Download the Literacy Cube game rules, sewing pattern, game card and traceable letters from the Creativity Shell.
- Gather your sewing supplies, fabric, thread, poly-fill, or scrap fabrics, felt or fabric for letters, hand sewing needle and/or sewing machine.
- Choose your 5 constants and 1 vowel for your cube.
- Tip: If you have the Creativity Shell’s Happiness Print from Moda Fabrics, you can leave empty and choose any letter you want with each roll!
- Make your cube.
- Gather some friends and make words together!

Funds raised will be used to help the Creativity Shell expand their creative programs that support positive youth mental health in both their Houston, TX and Rochester, NY studios.

Donate to Download a Pattern – $10 – $25: You will receive a sewing pattern, instructions, a game card, and a template of traceable letters for your literacy cube. Donate and download and receive instructions immediately!
Sponsor a Classroom Game Cards Only – $75: If you can prepare the fabric and only need some copies of the game cards, we will mail 25 Printed Game Cards + sewing instructions + pattern to you.
Sponsor a Classroom – $250 +: We’ll mail the fabric squares and 25 Game Cards to a classroom/school of your choice in the USA!
