Creativity Shell Launches First Mobile Sewing and Creative Studio!
(Houston, TX) Nonprofit organization the Creativity Shell is converting a 39-foot recreational vehicle (RV) into a mobile sewing and creative studio.
For those of you who have not heard about the Creativity Shell, they are a Houston organization on a mission to use creative trades such as sewing/textile to educate and inspire the next generation of makers. The organization teaches classes in their private studios as well as shelters that rescue children from homelessness and human trafficking. Their classes are designed to educate children while teaching them essential life and practical skills.
After winning a grant from the Jerry Dearing Foundation to purchase and renovate an RV into a mobile studio, the Creativity Shell plans to use the mobile studio to teach classes in local shelters that rescue children from homelessness and human trafficking.
When asked where the idea came about for the mobile studio, communications director of the Creativity Shell, Shelancia Daniel said “whenever we travel to shelters, we have to bring our carts with sewing machines and the supplies necessary to teach our classes. Our new mobile studio will help to save time for setting up and breaking down by being retrofitted with all the creative supplies we need.”
The mobile sewing studio named “Jerry” will also be used to offer creative classes to displaced children in disaster areas. “During Hurricane Harvey, I was watching all the children at the George Brown Convention center on TV and I wanted to bring some sewing machines down there to teach them to sew as they were waiting out the storm” Says Daniel. “We are hoping that in times of need, we can drive our mobile studio into temporary shelters to inspire the children to create in their time of need.”
A special ribbon cutting for the Creativity Shell Mobile Studio will be held at 11AM on Saturday December 1, 2018 at the Creativity Shell’s annual event, the Munchkin Market located in the parking lot of 1570 Kingwood Drive.
In order to help raise funds to support the Creativity Shell’s mission, the mobile studio will also be available for birthday parties and private events.
