In their continuing efforts to find creative ways to educate and inspire the next generation of Makers, nonprofit organization, the Creativity Shell will be hosting their annual fashion show #CreativityRocks2020 as a virtual event for the City of Houston.
The Creativity Shell is on a mission to use creative trades to educate and inspire the next generation of makers. The organization teaches sewing/textile arts and other trades classes to students in public libraries, schools and shelters that rescue children from homelessness and human trafficking. Their classes are designed to educate and inspire children by teaching them essential life and practical skills.
Due to the current COVID-19 crisis and the social distancing rules set forth by the government, like most businesses, the organization (like many others in the City of Houston) had to come to a halt in their operations as they knew it and had to do a quick turnaround to digitize their operations and give students the opportunity to continue working at home.
The organization has been holding out hope that the situation would get better and they would be able to host Creativity Rocks at the Humble Civic Center as planned, but unfortunately that is not going to be a reality anymore.
“The easiest thing to do at this point is to cancel the show.” Says Shelancia Daniel, Creative/Communication Director at the Creativity Shell. “By cancelling the show however, the organization would have to close operations, stop providing our services to the community and cease to be.” Added Daniel.
Creativity Rocks was designed to be an event where students in Creativity Shell classes got the opportunity to showcase their handmade goods in front of family and friends. It is the Creativity Shell’s only fundraiser of the year and it helps to provide scholarships and free classes to other entities within the community that cannot afford to pay for our classes. Last year, the Creativity Shell provided free sewing classes for 85 girls at Young Women’s College Preparatory Academy for the full year. The organization also provided sewing classes for students at Oaks Elementary School, they worked in community centers, title one schools, and they provided scholarships for students to take classes in the Creativity Shell Studios.
Even more important, Creativity Rocks was designed to give student participants a real-world experience that taught them to think outside the box and gain confidence and self-esteem. Without the show, it would add another huge loss to the number of items our children are already losing out on.
After speaking with board members, staff members are parents; the Creativity Shell decided the show will go on, but the format would have to change to a virtual show instead of their regular in-person event.
- Students participating in Creativity Rocks will finish their outfits at home.
- The Creativity Shell begin filming each student modeling their outfits.
- Once filming is complete, the Creativity Shell will be making a memorable video of the fashion show, that will be available live online on Friday, May 1, 2020 @7PM! This video will feature all of the students in the show and it will be edited to include the music as well as the first names of the student/model.
- The Creativity Rocks fashion show video will also feature special guestsin the broadcast, and this will be a memorable event for all the children who will be involved in this video. The video will also be something they can keep for the rest of their lives to remember this time we are in.
On the night of Creativity Rocks, the Creativity Shell wants families to set up a tent/table in their driveways, backyards or inside their homes with a candle or light at the window. A list of participating restaurants will be available online that will be providing dinner for families for pickup and delivery.
Please have either a computer, tablet or TV (connected to the internet) where you can log into our website www.creativityrocks.organd watch the show. If you purchase tickets to Creativity Rocks, dinner is included in the cost of your ticket along with many other extras.
All funds raised from #CreativityRocks2020 will be used to provide creative therapy classes for the Children on Houston once they are able to return to their regular school and afterschool activities.
