Creativity Shell Tackles Food Scarcity Among Children with Creativity Cooks!

Creativity Shell uses meal delivery/cooking class program, Creativity Cooks to tackle hunger and food scarcity among low income children.

If you have not heard of the Creativity Shell, they are a nonprofit organization on a mission to use creative trades to educate and inspire the next generation of makers. The organization teaches sewing/ textile arts, cooking, architecture and other creative classes to students in public libraries, schools and shelters that rescue children from homelessness and human trafficking. Their classes are designed to educate and inspire children by teaching them essential life and practical skills.

Creativity Cooks is a program that was launched by the Creativity Shell in Houston at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Creativity Cooks is a meal delivery program that delivers ingredients and recipes to children at their homes.  Recipes are written in a format that is easy for children to follow and fantastic for children to create a home cooked meal for themselves and replicate it for their families. A video of the project is also available online so children with difficulty reading our seeing can easily follow along and cook.

One of the best elements of Creativity Cooks is the children do not know what meal they are receiving, it’s a surprise! Each week students wait to receive their packages and are so excited to open it to see what’s inside.

Creativity Cooks International as well as other themes such as Islands in the Sun, Artisan Foods… were added to Creativity Cooks as the organization’s way of teaching children about different races and different cultures.  The Creativity Shell believes that food is one of those things that bring people together and if we can teach our children to accept each other and accept our differences, food is definitely a great place to start.

By October 2020, the Creativity Shell plans to introduce free or low-cost Creativity Cooks programs to children in low income families that are affected by food scarcity and/or receive food from food banks. Food scarcity is real for thousands of children in the Houston area and by participating in a program like Creativity Cooks, the Creativity Shell is hoping to tackle food scarcity teach children an essential skill like cooking at the same time.
